Another quick question for those with the know-how! My camera insurance is up for renewal next month and I am looking around for new quotes.
Can anybody recommend any companies?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Glover and Howe, or Aaduki:

Be careful and read the car part, i.e. where it has to be in a car and what times it is insured from and too, and if you have a non-estate/boot car where the boot is a physically separate compartment from the car eg. Hi-lux, check if it is covered.

For all the amateurs out there I have all my gear included on my household contents insurance, all risks at little extra cost, inside or outside. Covered in car as long as it is in a separate, lockable boot and not on display! I was covered for my recent trip to Mexico. No extra outlay for special photographic insurace and I have about £5000 worth of gear :toast:

Thanks for that Andy. I used to have this comfort before turning freelance. Just to add that make sure you itemise equipment over the threshold on the household insurance policy.

Hi Ian

I used to have mine through Lloyds TSB (underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance) incl. in my contents insurance until recently and it was quite expensive. I spoke to 'More Than' (which is Royal & Sun Alliance) when I decided to change my buildings insurance and they said I would get up to £75,000 of contents free. I told them I did my photography professionally and that most companies would not cover my photo gear away from the home - they said they would and the additional charge was very reasonable!

Hi David

I'm with Lloyds TSB with my house insurance and they couldnt take my equipment off quick enough when I said I did it professionally. Oh well. At the moment Glover and Howe seem to be the best quote although I have still to hear back from Aaduki.
Thanks again to all who have commented. :toast:

Those relying on household contents insurance just need to check with their company if they will still cover kit once some money is made selling photos. certainly mine wouldn't. I use Glover & Howe and find them very helpful. Haven't needed to claim in past 2 years. This topic was raised 2-3 years ago when someone had a few thousand quids worth of gear stolen from a car and the company refused to pay out under household contents.

I've just switched to Aaduki who were very helpful in deciding the level of cover. One point to note was that they do exclude cover for the US. I previously had worldwide cover with E&L but the small print says they had to be informed before every trip and they required complete itemisation of every item covered, filters and memory cards included! I also had some hassle when I accidentally damaged a camera/lens a year ago - I think they asked for three separate repair estimates which I argued was too time consuming and costly in practice and authorised Fixation to go ahead myself. After a delay they did pay up.
