Early blooming cacti in Joshua Tree NP. Just got back from a few weeks out in the desert. My AC in the car smells like just like the desert now, I miss the desert already.
Really neat, Steve. I've seen a lot of cacti out there, but not anything this far along in bloom. It was great to see you out there and get a chance to talk again. I will be going out again later this week too hopefully. I'll be looking for more of your posts from JTNP soon.
Three weeks in the desert..... I hate to think WHAT your car smells like.
Great bloom and fine take on it. Poppin' blossoms.

Make that a couple of weeks Harly
They're saying it's still early so I had to dig for anything sporadic. You can find a ton of the prickly pears blooming down between the south entrance and the residents of the Coachella Valley with thicker fields of flowers as you get close to civilization.
Looks like it's just starting to open and there are more blooms emerging. There's allot of this species in the park scattered around. But they kind of end up being soloists in color. The vertical gives a great sense of context for the cactus, but I think it would work well as a horizontal too.

Beautiful bloom Steve. I've never seen a blooming cactus in the wild so hopefully I will see one in the coming weeks.
That's quite a collection of flowers captured here. I saw quite a few barrel and beaver tail cactus' blooming in Coyote Canyon (Anza Borrego) this past weekend, but very few with this many flowers. Nice find!

You might consider opening up the the cactus a bit. my eye is drawn to the brighter light on the rock. The reds in the bloom ar really nice.
