Hornet macro
A few days of warm weather and the bugs are out in force. I could not resist the temptation to seek more practice with the macro lens.

The hornet is a complex subject and constantly on the move and carries one hell of a sting which I can testify to.

Canon 1D3 Canon 180mm EF f/3.5 Macro USM F/13 ISO 400 tripod

Critique, Comments and Advice most welcome thanks for looking.

I'm struggling some what with the ring flash settings so any advice would really help please.

This is the cropped head of the hornet.

I think the original is the better shot as the oof antennae is too prominent in the second. Your angle of view and a longish lens has meant you are unlikely to get much more depth of field. I'm afraid I'm unable to offer any constructive advice re the ring flash as I haven't any recent experience. Still a much better macro than I've done.

Hi Barry,

Great detail in the head and a good attempt. The angle that you've shot the subject hasn't helped the dof and the antennas appear transparent, perhaps due to a low shutter speed. I also don't have any experience of ring flash I'm afraid. Keep at it!

Cheers,

Lewis.
