Great Crested Grebe
20D, 400/2.8 + 2x, ISO200, 1/320 @ f11 EV -2/3, AF + MF hybrid (AF into the ballpark, fine tuned manually), Gitzo + BH1 at ground level, C1pro + CS2.

Hi,

As Spring approaches went out to scout possible locations for the mating ritual, found a nice spot that gets decent light with good reflections for the water colour, only one Grebe there though so hope it finds a mate

All the best

Nice, i like the muted colours of the bg, the bird looks like you stuck it on :) its a felt grebe  i like the low angle, what pod are you using?

My local lake has a pair but they seem to be really shy, only make up a few pixels on the image...

I like the image, but I think you could possibly light it a tad. What is the source of the brown water reflection?

Hi Tom,

Yes you are right , original was processed on my laptop, have posted a version where I have lifted the midtones slightly in the main Avian forum now that I have seen it on my main work computer. The water colour comes from the woodland and waterside plants on the edge of the lake here, the combination of colours tend to merge into the brown that you see.

Paul... tripod is an old Ally Gitzo Studex, don't know the model number anymore, very strong, and rock solid, legs will go flat to the ground.

All the best

Ahh, i wondered if it was a small one, my manfrotto also does this. I'm currently torn between a monopod or a bushhawk. My 300mm 2.8 is getting a bit of a hand full.

Hi Phil,

Saw the one in the avian forum. Lifting the midtones did the trick. Fine image of a beautiful bird.

Hi Phil

A nice image, the brown colours and tones in the water work well with the Grebe. :toast:

Good luck getting more behavioural shots.

cheers

Lovely shot Phil,

Very moody light, and perfectly framed.

Hello Phil
These birds always make good subjects, and especially so with water colour as you have taken here. I like it.
Best wishes
