40D 1/640s f/6.3 ISO200 400mm Tripod Hide

Here is an image taken last Saturday at my local gravel pit, with a perfect sunrise and loads of mist the conditions where perfect. But the grebes just wouldn't display close enough to me, here is the best I got but I plan on having another go soon!

Anyone know when is best to see Grebes displaying, morning/evening? Is it only during the spring?

Thanks for any comments.

I always find these a struggle in bright sunshine. The lh one looks a little hot in places, although that may just be compression. Not keen on the comp I must say, but as my local birds are playing hard to get as well, there could be a touch of jealousy there. I've never seen them displaying much beyond the breeding season I must admit, but displaying or not, they are great subjects all the year round. Once they have stopped their courtship display you still have the little stripeys hitching a ride to come; like I said, great subjects.

The comp doesnt sit easy with me either, Love grebes an have spent a lot of time with them, They should be doing their weed dance around this time and for the next few weeks but can be at any time so its a matter of spending as much time with them as possible

Crop isn't working for me either Liam, if you have this in landscape format showing both birds in full Ithink it make for a cracking shot.

Thanks for all the comments and advice. I realise the comp wont be for everyone but I have been experimenting with close ups recently, something I have never really done before so its been a bit of a learning curve!

Here is a different crop

The original is better imho composition wise, I didnt realise that this was a crop let alone a huge crop, Maybe in the future you could mention if an image has been cropped and by how much, It helps when trying to give critique
