Gilded or Red Shafted Flicker?
I photograph in the desert behind our place what at first I thought was a Northern Flicker. After I got home and started looking at the images and trying to verify in my NG Birds to North America it is too close to call. The orange crown and yellow tail lead me to believe Gilded but still not sure.
Thanks for ID help.

Richard D, where are you? This is your neck of the woods (or desert) and you know every bird there..
Hard to tell if it's a gilded without seeing the wing linings.

Jim,

I don't have a field guide handy but I think the combination of the red mustache with the yellow under the tail (and presumably the wings as well) means Gilded. Yellow-shafted have a black mustache and the yellow undertail/wings and Red-shafted have a red mustache with red undertail and wings. I'd say a Gilded based on my limited knowledge and lack of a handy field guide (it's in the car from doing shorebirds last week).

Drew is correct.

The red malar strip is shared by male Gilded and male "red-shafted" flickers. The "yellow-shafted" flicker male has a black malar stripe.

Also note the extensive tan crown on this bird that is not shared by either color morth of Northern Flicker.
