Hi everyone,
could you please help me in giving a name to this nice small flower? I took this along a small stream in a wood mainly of beech and chestnut trees at about 1300 m (4000 ft) of elevation in the Alps, last year mid of May.
Thanks in advance,
Paolo

Thanks Colin for your suggestion. I'm not sure though it's a marsh marigold. Aren't those yellow flowers? Or they can be white too?

I have doubts about the marsh marigold id as well. First, Paolo is posting from Italy so any id based on a North American species should be looked at closer. Also, marsh marigolds, at least anything along the lines of Caltha palustris, is generally a yellow flower with 5 sepals, not 6. Assuming that the leaves in your shot are from the same plant, the leaves are also wrong for marsh marigolds.
I still have no clue what it is, though. If you haven't reposted it in the floral gallery, I'd do so.
Thanks Dan. Yes, those leaves are from the same plant. Oh, well, I guess at least...
Yep, I think I will post it to the flora gallery, thanks for the suggestion.
P.S. we do have Marsh marigolds here as well, we call it calta palustre. But I also think the elevation at which I too this pic is too high for those flowers.

Hmmm, I wonder which way the marsh marigolds travelled. Didn't know you have them there.
We have a lot of invasive plants here (japanese honeysuckle and purple loosestrife come to mind) so I am a bit used to shooting non-natives but once posts start crossing continents with an id, I always take a step back and ask if it is reasonable.
I haven't got a clue about any elevation restrictions on the marsh marigolds. Most of my time is spent under 500 meters and they seem to be fairly common below this elevation. Ohio ain't the Alps
Nice image, by the way. There isn't really anything I would change with it.

I was going to say that it was some type of Anemone - so I am glad that David was able to give the exact ID.
