This past week saw some strong postings in the Fauna Gallery - by both NPN members and non-members alike. As always, I felt conflicted making a single "Pick of the Week" and welcome the opportunity to showcase both the chosen image several others on the short list:

1. Alessandra & Rocco's "European Common Frog". This delightful image of two frogs in an intimate embrace shows a different view of wildlife photography - one through the eye of a very wide angle lens! While much (or most) of wildlife photography is accomplished with the use of telephoto or super-telephoto lens, this image is a great reminder that if one adjusts their worldview a little, there's a whole universe of interesting fauna images right below our feet. Well done A&R!

2. Jagdeep Rajput's "Baby Elephant". This image is a fine example of how images of young animals are just SO captivating. Jagdeep captured this wonderful image while the young pachyderm was struggling to learn to control its prehensile trunk. Another typical "Jagdeep shot" (which means it's a great shot!).

3. Subharghya Das's "The Handsome Prince". Wildlife portraits can be tough to pull off, but this fantastic shot of young tiger transcends the "typical" wildlife portrait and, to make it all the better, it was shot in a natural (non-captive) environment. Subharghya effectively increased the interest in the shot by providing a nice snippet of natural history (and life history) to accompany his image.

4. William Brozy's "The Mares of Assateague". It's about the light! If you're a horse lover, you absolutely HAVE to check out this image. So simple, so effective. Check it out!

Almost unfortunately, I had to elevate one of these images above the others and make it the Pick of the Week. I chose Jagdeep Rajput's "Baby Elephant". Not only did Jagdeep capture a captivating behaviour with a young animal very effectively, but he also did it with a simple but beautiful colour palette and his usual strong eye for composition. Congrats Jagdeep!

One final comment. Over the past 6 months Vincent, Lon, and I have run into many images from non-NPN members that, if eligible, would have very likely taken "Picture of the Week" honours. In doing so, those images would automatically qualify for consideration in the annual and prestigious "Pick of the Year". Just another thing for non-members to consider when posting their great images!

Cheers...
