Looking to try and get to SHP near Page, AZ (looks like some of you have been there). How close would I be able to get by passenger vehicle? Got map but not very familiar w/ the roads around here and wasn't able to find much info. Feel free to email directly if you'd prefer. Thanks!
It really all depends on the type of vehicle you want to use to get there.
I think you can get within 100 yards of the area depending on the vehicle (high clearance? all wheel drive?). The latter part of the road on top of the mesa takes a short dive into the area just before a gate that may be difficult to climb out of with a car.
Try and camp there if it's at all possible.
*EDIT*
Jim's right...those roads can be a bit confusing.
Martres' book and coordiantes are correct until the end. I don't think he notes the side road that takes a dive off of the mesa top. At first, I followed the better road on top and drove up to an east-west fenceline.

Jared,
You can get to within 100' or so of SHP in your car. Was there a couple weeks ago and don't recall any part of the road that you can't negotiate with a stock car. The dirt roads getting there are a bit confusing though. Having said that, pay attention to what Mr. Mumaw has to say. He is generally spot on with his comments.

Within 100'??? Geez, if I can't pull up to a location and shoot it from the driver's seat of my truck, I'm not going.

Thanks guys, we will be in a subie outback, so I guess we can always turn around if need be. I didn't see a description in martres AZ book, is it in the UT edition? I have a map and gps points but am now questioning the reliability. In any case, I appreciate the info.
It's on pg. 204 of the Arizona book, Jared.
No worries at all with a Subaru Outback! First time I visited was with a Subaru Baja and we did just fine.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the responses. Got out there tonight for an amazing SS shoot. Not able to process, so here's a quick pic unprocessed just to give a small sample of what we were working with. Thanks again for everyone's info.

Jared, Here is a shot from Google earth looking north to the point that shows some of the roads. The main road comes in south of the basin. When you head north you'll bear right and climb onto the ridge and follow it to the point. Like Jim said, there are plenty of roads to choose from but Martres' book helps and knowing generally where it is in relation to the larger dirt roads will help.
Note that there are some roads in the basin that you can see from the ridge and when on the point, but I don't think there is any way to get from those up to the main formations (at least where I went). If there is a way it would take some serious 4-wheeling.
Have fun, it's a cool place.

Glad you got out there! Guess I was a little late with the help.
Thank you Jim and everyone else for the quick response here. As Jared mentioned we found it without a problem, but the quick response was greatly appreciated.
