Gull ID please
I took this tonight, in central Kansas. The gull was very large. My first thought was Ring-billed except for the brown. Research suggested Herring or Thayer's also. Thanks in advance.

Well, its been a while since I worked gulls on the east coast of which the ring-billed was fairly common (I'm in CA now). This looks like a r-b gull going into its first full summer. The heft of the bill is right. Herring/Thayer's have a larger, differently shaped bill. The only confusing thing is your statement was that this is a really large gull. R-B are consdierably smaller than a Herring. I don't know what the common gulls are in Kansas so size may be relative to what you're used to. Hope this is of some help.

Rob -

It's likely a late first winter/first summer Ring-billed Gull. The back and wing patterns are right (as well as I can tell with the ruffled feathers). The bill is too delicate for Herring, and the leg color is wrong for Thayers. Browsing through Olsen and Larsson, it's hard to see what else it could be.

Thanks for the input. I have limited experience with gulls. We mostly see Ring-billed, and that was my original thought but the brown was throwing me off. The gull looked large, but it was with a Willet and Ruddy Turnstone so that probably made it look larger yet.
