Those of you who would like a crack at photographing
Sandhill Cranes, can find them at Eckert, CO.
Last year, there were 15,000 that stopped over on
their way from Monte Vista to Vernal, Utah. Check
out their webpage for the dates and numbers from
last year.
Thanks for the info Art. I was not aware of this festival.
Should make a good combo trip with the Black Canyon.
From the description of viewing etiquette on their websie, I get the impression that access to the reservoir could be rather limited. Have you been there during the Sandhill migration? Are the photo ops primarily distant views?
Monte Vista's best crane viewing is next year, speaking of distances. Tip from one of the site managers when I was there last year... They do a five-year crop rotation on the field near the Southern viewing lot; next year the best crop comes to the foreground (this year is, I believe, a fallow year for the closest section of the field).
Of course, if the owls are as close to the road this year as they were last year, that alone is a reason to head to Monte Vista for their festival...
