Dunes from Hell!

Dunes from Hell!
In a moment of temporary insanity i decided i needed some GSD shots in the midst of a hellacious windstorm, so i ran out to the Park on Wednesday. By mid-afternoon, the winds were blowing 70+ mph and the tour buses ran away, and i think i was the only one left in the park (my car was the only one i could see!) It was totally surreal as the cloud of sand slowly obliterated the mountains, and the sun slipped into a brown haze. I tried to celebrate the return of Medano Creek with a hike upstream, but after a half mile i threw in the towel as the winds were just too much. So i bushwacked up the Sangres to get out of the wind and get some views from above, then headed back down for the otherworldly sunset. Here's one from near sunset.

2) The haze made for some low contrast shots.

3) No one dared go up high dune this day!

4) Some surreal lighting.

5) View from about 1600 feet up in the Sangres.

6) Another from up high, the winds pummeling the dune mass below.

7) a vertical of the creek near sunset

8) This isnt colorized or converted--just straight auto WB.
Thats all for now, still have a couple favs to process, i got a very brief bit of color at sunset. :wavey:

Great composition in #1. I love those ripples on Medano Creek.

Any paint left on your car ?
Posted by Stan Rose on April 30, 2010 at 3:05 AM
Yep, Bill, but not much skin left on my face
My Mkii will need a good cleaning--about halfway through i got a friendly 'error message' informing me that it had malfunctioned (nice to be warned) and i had to clean out the lens contacts to get it working again!

These are all great Stan, very unique with the Sand storm lighting etc. I really like #1, look forward to seeing those few favs you're processing too  .

They're all great, but #6, #6, #6, #6, #6!!! WOW!!!
Posted by Jason Woerly on April 30, 2010 at 10:15 AM
I agree with Todd, #6 is a standout.

Great shots ! Liked #1 and #4

You just keep getting better and better. #1 is pretty special. (You might also look at a 4x5 crop, centering that shrub/glow.) This is a great set.

Great effort, again.

You're going to be using the blower brush to clean the sand out of your equipment for a while.
Looks like enduring that wind was worth it though. This is quite a unique set of dune images. #6 also caught my eye the most, but I'm really fond of #1 and #5 too. Sweet stuff.

#1 is my favorite, followed by #1, and #1 comes in third as well. Oh, did I mention I really like #1. Seriously, great comp on #1 with the ripples in the water echoing the ripples of the dunes, really super stuff, Stan.

All great. Thanks for sharing the images and the conditions as they add drama to the images.

You know Stan, there are salons where you can get dermabrasion without trashing your gear. Besides the fact that you are crazy, good thinking to go...no footprints to worry about

Doesn't look like a lot of fun, but looks like you came away with a few keepers.

You're a brave man for taking on those conditions, especially with camera gear. I love #1, Stan, especially that foreground. I've never seen a dunes view like #6. I really enjoy that image.

Oh yeah, I like the way Pam thinks: No footprints! That's ingenious! Hey man, now that I'm looking at these on my desktop instead of my laptop, I'm still lovin' #6, but that first one takes on even more power for me. Same goes for #4.

Man you sure do get out there a lot. Fantastic work once again.

Stan, the creek shots are amazing. The auto WB shot is unreal.

You are a brave man, Stan. Those conditions look brutal! All are nice work but #1 and 3 stand out for me. :toast:
Posted by Dean Sauskojus on April 30, 2010 at 7:25 PM
Yeah, #1. Like all the ripples in the creek. Nice subtle tones to. Looks like it could use some cw rotation.
Posted by Scott Fricke on April 30, 2010 at 9:13 PM
#1 is a just stellar! The wave patterns really go nicely with the dunes. #6 is my second favorite. That wind certainly gave you some unique shots.

What an experience and what great images to get.

Nice work. I like numbers 1 and 3 the best. Sometimes it pays to be crazy.

Stan these are all very nice but the ripples in the first one takes the cake. But u
the last one is a very close second. Excellent work. Always love your dune shots!

A very good series!
I moan and whine about these Spring winds, but you just plowed straight ahead and captured a fine collection to add to your body of work from here. That's inspiring...

My favorites that warrant inclusion in the 'book' are the one you posted at ES&S and #7. The patterns there are just sublime.

Posted by John Klotz on May 2, 2010 at 12:59 PM
Well Stan, you have fired me up for another Dunes trip soon. Is it ever NOT windy there?
That does look brutal!
Posted by Jack Brauer on May 3, 2010 at 2:29 AM
All great shots, but number one is very special, imho. I love the subtle/mysterious colors, and the elegant comp.
