Wood Duck
One from yesterday you can imagine my surprise while sitting in the hide taking images of great crested grebe that this should swim past, have a quick look at me and then fly away.

after looking in my bird identification books I think it is definitely a wood duck and not Mandarin duck well possibly maybe ???.

Phil.

you took your chance very well Phil. Certainly not a species I've seen before.

Phil

I think you are right with the id, the females of W vs M are very difficult to separate but M have a more obvious white bar behind the bill and a sligtly more rounded head giz. The eye ring is quite small here but I think overall it is right for W D.

Nice encounter even if only an escapee

Classic image of the subject and its reflection. That reminds me, I'm having duck for dinner this evening.

Its meant to be the most popular duck here in North Carolina and after 18 months i have only seen 1, Very nice image of this pretty duck and the reflection really sets it off, I have never had lens envy until today

It is a super shot, and it is a female Wood Duck, (dark nail on the end of the bill) A lovely composition, like it very much :toast:

Lovely shot Phil. I had a photograph of one of these taken in my local park a few years ago but seem to have lost the image so can't compare it. :wavey:
