GCG and crop question
My last GCG received a mixed reaction in terms of the crop I choose, so here is the same bird, with more space around it.

Any suggestions as to crop gratefully received - this one is FF

Camera Model Canon EOS-1D Mark III
Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/1600
Av( Aperture Value ) 5.0
ISO Speed 200

Hi Graham,
Cropping is always a personal thing, but I prefer this version. Although it gives the impression of being tighter to the LH frame than it actually is, I don't think it matters too much as the light is all on the face of the bird. That light seems enhanced by the larger area of dull colour around it in this version. The closer crop devalues the spotlight effect, but that is just my opinion. It's a fine shot however you like it best. Why do you want to crop it anyway, you're question infers that you feel you have to crop it somehow or another?

Not sure why you need or feel the need to crop an image-get the composition right at the time of pressing the button and keep the maximum amount of pixels in the image is always the best way, This image is fine as it is-maybe tight to one side but ok, The only thing that would improve it would be a better angle or head turn

Graham

I agree with Eric what's wrong with this shot as is? I often puzzle over crop preferences and why they are taken.

Thank guys - I should have been clearer - crop v. comp, rather than just crop.

I'll explain - In the other image I posted earlier in the week, the bird was closer, and was swimming into the frame, so I didn't have all of the body in the shot. The detail in the head and eye caught my attention and I did a slight crop to emphasis that aspect, rather than going for this image showing the whole of the Grebe. Now I have feedback on both which is what I was after.

You've helped me a lot with these 2 shots, so thanks v much :wavey: :wavey:

I prefer this version Graham, to me it is a lovely composition, superb colour.

This looks ok to me.
I did a close up head shot the other day and purposely went for the big close up. I suppose if you can do it on the fly all well and good but it don't always work like that !

This is better Graham,

Slightly too tight on the LHS still and a head turn towards the camera would have helped further.

i agree with eric too, sometimes there is to much pressure to show full close up images of a subject, but actually they look so much better with some enviroment around them

nice pic
