Shag - (Phalacrocorax aristotelis)
I always find it very difficult to judge exactly what colour this bird is, as there are emeralds, reds, blacks etc all contained within one subject, anyway...

Easy mistake to make Steve !

I like the BKGR and the subject is exposed well. I would prefer more space at the top personally.

You sure nailed this one. Perfectly exposed. Well done.

exposure looks good, they are a beautiful colour in the right light, have seen pics of them with beautiful greens and purples showing through, would have loved to have seen the eye more open though to show off their beautiful eyes

Karen I have many shots with 'eyes open', what I wanted, was to convey a feeling of awareness, wily, cunning, crafty and having the eyes half open I feel I have achieved this. I find these birds rather sinister in their black colour and beady eyes and therefore for me it has answer what I wanted to portray.

The way the light is catching the beak is particularly eye-catching.

Black birds are so hard to get good pics of, to hightlight the colours and feathers.
you have done a great job here.

Hello Stephen.

You have caught the light just perfectly on this one, and makes that beak such a strong point of interest.

Excellent exposer as well keeping all the detail in light areas and dark areas.

What colour is a shag? Any colour you like in the right light, and you have a good range of colours in the plumage here. I like that half-closed eye, and agree that it conveys something of the character of the species. Background colour suits the subject well.
