By the way, I did get an opportunity besides attending the symposium to get one decent picture while in Moab...fought high winds to hike up on this butte in Canyonlands NP and photograph the granary with small arch.
Great shot but very dis-heartening to see the vandals are still at work. 2 years ago the full wall and opening were still intact. I was there literally days/hours after someone vandalized the right hand wall by knocking it over. The bottom of the doorway was still there at the time.
definitely a bummer. i was there a few days before it was knocked down. for some reason i had hoped that the park service would build it back up. its instances like these that make me wish these locations were closed off. or at least kept a secret.
Yeah Tony, there is one very popular ruin near Comb Ridge that has changed drastically since my first visit back in 03. While the Internets are fantastic for many things it is detrimental for this type of activity.
Sorry to hijack your posting Rod. So what I like about this granary photo is the sense of depth, with the inclusion of the background, which in itself is intriguing. Also, there is a good balance of elements that keep the viewer interested and looking around the frame. For a midday shot it works real well. After all, this is what most people see if they visit these places, so the magic hour isn't really an issue.
Chris---actually, I timed it to be there before the sun intruded any further as the ruin does face due west. Probably if one waited for the magic hour, i.e., just before or after sunset, that would work too. While this site is promoted by the NPS with signage at the parking area, increased visits to more remote sites ala the promotion in my other post today could lead to this kind of problem as well.
This is a nice shot of a really cool location. Only nit is a bit of haloing along the roof line otherwise great job with dealing with what I'm guessing were difficult lighting conditions.
Beautiful comp, Rod. I love the inclusion of the background. I was at this spot last Thanksgiving and there certainly appears to be more damage since then. I have given up trying to understand why people would damage places like this
I wish I had made it to this spot before the damage occurred. I guess one can only hope that the NPS will someday restore the site, like they have to some of the sites in Mesa Verde and other parks in the past, or perhaps start to monitor access like they do in certain places such as Zion, Coyote Buttes, etc. It's too bad that it has to come to that though.
Nice shot Rod. I like the image alot. I wish I could get around and get to some of these places :) Sorry to hear about the ruins being ruined.
I was out taking pictures saturday and some kids where tearing up the mountains. I just turned them in---maybe a nice large ticket will make them think next time. Yes they were caught ---deputies and parkservice. Just can't stand places being tore up.
The small portal and nice view make this nice. I like how the clouds align with the ceiling. Is this setup where the early morning light would get into the granery area?
I do not understand people and their vandalism and graffiti. Erk. I had been to an area off the San Juan River in the 94. The next year it had been stolen from.
