it's that time of year when things start happening in the undergrowth.

Canon 5D with MPE-65 macro lens, diffused flashgun on side bracket, 1/160, f13, ISO 50.

It's best viewed large so here's a 1100 pixel version.

All C+C welcomed.

Hi Matt,

A great behaviour image of these seven spot ladybirds, the shiny wing cases are often difficult to light well with flash because of the sheen, you have done a great job of it here...

many thanks Phil, it's true that ladybirds are about the biggest test for flash photography and it's taken quite a bit of practise to get the reflections as limited as this. Thanks for your comment.

I don't think I have even seen mating ladybirds, let alone tried to photograph them. You have handled the technical problems very well.

The larger version Matt really does do it justice. Love the sheen & detail on the 'shell'. A tender moment nicely captured.

Spot on (excuse the pun), the larger version is great. Its extremely well lit and very colourful. I've never seen them 'at-it' before either! :toast:
