Hello everyone,
This is my first post on RMNP. I will be visiting Maroon Bells and the Crested Butte area between September 28th and October 2nd for the fall colors. It's been many years since I've traveled through Colorado and I'm trying to gather as much info as possible.
I'll be traveling from Glendale, AZ and was planning on staying in Gunnison. However, traveling from Gunnison to the Bells presented some problems because of the time required since I need to do it in one day.
So I plan to drive to Glenwood Springs the first day and go to the Maroon Bells the following day. First of all I've looked at many sites regarding the Maroon Bells, but I'm still not sure of the following:
At this time of year buses only run on weekends I believe. If there are no buses running during the day I'm there is it still permissible to drive your vehicle in to Maroon Lake and is there still a fee for this?
If there is any other information on this area you can offer I would appreciate it.
Last year got there before sunup......no one taking fees at this time of day....wait till later and there may be. Expect to join many other bright eyed and bushy tailed photographers at Maroon Bells, however, it is still a great location...I never tire of seeing it. Joe Rogers
Yeah, if you go up before sunrise, no fee is required and you can drive all the way up to the parking lots near Maroon Lake. It'll just be you and 100 others, but that won't diminish the beauty of the place unless you let it.
It's funny, Aspen and Crested Butte are SO CLOSE as the crow flies, but by car, it's a whole 'nother matter! If your time is that limited, I'd pick one or the other. You'll find plenty to shoot either way.
Yep, last time I was there I got there at about 11pm and slept in the parking lot -- along with about 2 dozen other people. Its still a great experience, though.
