An Owlet
My pal Bob Karcz directed me to a nest with two owlets just off Hwy 285 and the C470. When I got there Monday I discovered the owlets were out of the nest and sitting in two separate trees. One was in a tree with so many branches about him that a photo was impossible. (That was the one with the best light, of course.) I got some shots of this one just before the sun set. I checked yesterday about 3:30PM to see if the birds were still there and they were not. I shot this with my Tamron 200-500mm lens at 500mm, 1/250 second and f/6.5, Nikon D2xs and a Gitzo tripod with Really Right Stuff ballhead. Kurt Bowman, you needn't worry about the competition from me, eh?

Cool shot Rod. These guys are collecting a crowd. I heard about them last weekend and got a few shots mid day on Sat.

Hey Rod, thanks for the comment on my Owlets. Looks like this set have taken their first flight then, it would definitely be worth your while to go back and shoot shoot and shoot. I found with my images the best shots are when the light catches their wonderful yellow eyes!.

Nice find, to bad they weren't there the second time around.

Don't sell yourself short Rod...these little ones are VERY tough to get a shot of out in the open. I think you did a great job of getting a shot of the most important part unobstructed (the head). Looks like you had very tough lighting conditions. If I were you, I would keep heading back there to catch them again. He looks small enough to still be around. I think I know the nest your speaking of (Sims and 285?)
