During the recent CSNP spring gathering, Jon Wisniewski and I made the steep bushwhack through thick ice storm debris to a nearby waterfall. When we finally made it to a spot above the falls, Jon exclaimed "Is that a basketball down there!?". Surely not, I thought. "No, it must be a balloon" I answered. But when I took a better look at the brown ball bobbing in the pool at the base of the falls, sure enough, there were the telltale black ribs.
Jon had the great idea of renaming the beautiful location Basketball Falls. After all, we sure didn't see any dogwoods! We decided to leave the ball there for the next visitor to puzzle over. On the drive back we debated at great length how in the world a basketball would find its way there.
Nice shot, and story, John. I've been wondering about the name of this waterfall since someone mentioned it a few days ago. That's really crazy! No telling how it got there...
The dogwood(s) have been gone since way before the ice storm. I was there two springs ago and was a little disappointed in not finding any. But there was a nice little redbud to save the day.
Yup, some rednecks cut the dogwoods down around Dogwood Falls CLOUDLANDa few years ago - looks like there is one on the ground in the foreground in this photo in fact, and you can even see the sawed ends. They are prolific trees and shall return, probably more than ever.
Some of you may remember a couple of year ago when I was playing b-ball with my daughter in our yard - the ball left the area and went over the bluff and bounced down the big hillside - I never did find it. About 700 feet to the bottom. Six months later the basketball appeared in the yard again - some hiker must have found it down on Whitaker Creek and hauled it back up. I'm sure it would have been funny to have seen it out in the woods or in the creek, just like this one. Us rednecks tend to loose things out in the woods sometimes!
Someone who lives nearby and doesn't like "outsiders" - of course, most of these people came from "outside" too! They are part of the "let me in to paradise and then close the gate behind me so that no one else can get in!"
As for the game, it could have just gotten lost by someone like my basket ball did!
Funny story and great shot. But I think you should have gotten an action shot of Jon running/jumping like he was trying to make a dunk, instead of just standing there. Have fun recovering from poison ivy - I'm extremely allergic to the stuff, usually have to end up taking prednisone, and can feel for you both.

:)
John- Hows the poison ivy going? I'm taking prednisone for mine for about 8 more days
Tim- I don't know if they have been cut down or not, but we didn't see any near the falls. Maybe the ice storm claimed them.
