Dotterel 'female'
Taken this morning on Salisbury Plain where for some days now we have had a 'trip' of 14 Dotterel. Beats walking up the Cairngorms - had to make the arduous journey of almost 50 metres from my car!

Canon 1D Mk1V 500mm + x1.4 iso 1600 (no noise reduction) f7.1 1/250 small crop.

Looks good to me David, I'm starting to feel left behind now with a camera that isn't that great at iso 400 :frown:
Just out of interest, I appreciate that the bg is pretty good for iso 1600, but would you say that you had lost detail in the chest feathers or is that just because they are so soft and fine or because this is only 720 pixels? Just wondered if there were any downsides to the high iso.

At 1600 David the quality isn't bad, what is it like at full res, are you happy with the MKIV? Guess I am just echoing Eric's thoughts.

Something I have never seen before, so thanks.

Looks good to me-welcome to the high ISO club  I think i have only seen images of these at altitude so this is new to me, Great looking bird. Was this very early as the light has a bluish feel to it

Hi Eric/Steve

Yes one of the downsides of high iso is a loss of fine detail and this was processed in ACR CS3 which as a RAW converter is poor. The RAW converter in CS5 is meant to be much better in retaining detail/sharpness in high iso images so I will re-process this again when I receive my copy of CS5 (arrived yesterday but they sent the wrong operating system  )

I feel with no NR this isnt bad and what you have to remember this will never be printed at 100% and at 50% you halve the noise and the perceived sharpness/detail looks better!

The attached is a 100% crop.

Hi David,

Looks very good at ISO1600 to my eyes.

ref. Adobe. I am having exactly the same experience. They sent the wrong OS version to me twice...

Cheers

Thank you David. It is so hard to tell exactly what is going on at 720 pixels, so the 100% crop is very informative. It's pretty impressive, but I can't help wondering whether they have a sensor that doesn't generate so much noise or have just written auto noise reduction into the in-camera software - or maybe both. The 100% crop has something of the look of an image that has had noise reduction applied.
However it is done, it must be nice not to have to struggle with 1/30 second in those conditions. Thanks for taking the time.

Nothing beats walking up the Cairngorms! (except perhaps taking the funicular and walking down). What a lovely find!

David
Download a trial of the new Capture One, The colours are much better than Photoshop, I now use C1 for most of my workflow and finish off in CS5, Although the skimmer image was processed in CS5  My friends who use the 7D and MK4 prefer C1 for the IQ over photoshop
