Two Weeks in Southern Utah
Hello! Like many others around here, I escaped to the canyons this spring. Spent two weeks out there checking out new places (for me) and some old favorites as well.

This is one here might be my favorite from the trip, perhaps simply because it was so damn fun to shoot!

After a whirlwind round of processing I've posted my favorite photos from the trip here: http://www.widerange.org/gallery/utah-canyons-2010/

Please take a look and let me know what you think!

Thanks,
Jack

Here's another one just for fun.... the spooky canyon spirit! LOL....

:toast:

I can't decide if I like this one with/without the water. The upper half is so spectacularly abstract - and really plays with your head in parts. I don't think I've seen ripple reflections on sandstone before ... NICE.

Great set, as always. I'm partial to the neon tree images.

Jack, Great LWH canyon shot. I have a similar shot except there isn't a hiker AND there is a little bit of snow on the ground! Otherworldy stuff in there man.

You know, it's funny; as I looked through the gallery on your site, I wasn't seeing any Brauerisms, just some fairly typical canyon country stuff. Then I got to the snowy Bryce sunrise pano, and from that point on, it was game on! Never mind that when it was out of context, I couldn't tell what the photo posted here was about. In context, and with the companion piece with the zebra stripe reflections, it's a mind-blower!

So, who won the gravity challenge?

Awesome, Jack! This is certainly one of the most unique Golden cathedral shots I've seen. I prefer the first one here to the second. Springtime in Escalante and Neon Ripples are my picks of the whole set. Feeling very jealous!

A good collection of images.
I especially like the collection from Escalante (esp. 'Neon Varnish').
Must have been a real thrill to see and photograph that condor! How far away was he from you?
Finally, I've wanted to visit the Happy Canyon narrows for a number of years now. Good to see a talented photographer do it justice.
Were you able to follow the 4 wheel drive road down Poison Springs Canyon to gain access? Any details would be appreciated!

Great set of images Jack, it looks like you had a productive trip. I especially like the Bryce shots and the ones from Happy Canyon, looks like a great place to explore.

Thanks for the comments!

Todd - I'd say Wesley, pictured there, did pretty well... he had a good jump going. I would go far but just tended to continue running straight down into the water... LOL..

John - Yes I drove the 4WD road down Poison Springs then around the drivers-left side of the rim. It was I think about 16 miles, and VERY rough. I did it ok in a Tacoma, but was white-knuckling it at times. And praying that my truck didn't break down somehow. The road seems to be dissolving/decaying and there are spots that are basically hollow from erosion underneath (with steep dropoffs on the side). But thankfully they held up. Then it's about I think a 4 mile hike to the start of Happy Canyon from there. Very cool place, and I was the only one around!

Oh, and the condor was only about 10-15 yards(?) away. I took that shot at 200mm and slightly cropped it. There were a lot of people around (of course, being Zion) but the condor didn't seem to care. Of course I missed the shot when it finally took off and flew away!

Ooh - very nice indeed! Love the Bryce shots, and the Neon Canyon shots. And the Happy Canyon shots. And, well, the rest of it.

I too would like to know more of your trip in to Happy Canyon.

Great stuff, Jack. That road into Happy Canyon sounds like my kind of road.

I really like your abstract-ish work in Neon Canyon using the reflections. Very cool!

Thanks, Jack. I'm much obliged to you!

Les, you can find info. on Happy Canyon in
Michael Kelsey's book titled 'Canyon Hiking Guide to the Colorado Plateau (Non-Technical)'.

Wow Jack, great set of images. The BC shots are obviously stunning and killer, but I like the Chock Rock shots and the GC shots posted here are just fun and interesting. Above all, looks like a FUN trip exploring that part of the state. That Petroglyph and rattlesnake pic freaks me out (I have an Indiana Jones like phobia of snakes and they always seem to find me), but great find nonetheless. I always enjoy following your work and adventures.

Those are just otherworldy, mystical, magical, whimsical, and all the other cals. Your work there shows once again you are one of the best.

Looks like an amazing trip Jack.
I liked the two from Happy Canyon and panoramas of Goblin Valley and Bryce the most.
Thanks for sharing.

Great collection, Jack!
I really like the Robber's Roost shots. A friend and I have been discussing a trip into Blue John and some of the other canyons. I've been interested in getting to Happy Canyon, too. You did a great job capturing the area.
Thanks for sharing!

Great collection - love the snake+petroglyph image!

Man what a great series, looks like a blast. but you did miss out on some snow, boarded two feet of fresh stuff yesterday up on the ridge. but yeah I'm ready for some warmer weather.

Absolutely Love your moonlight shots, I should be getting the MarkII sometime this month I'm really looking forward to trying some night shots. Thanks for the inspiration.

Great series, Jack. I especially like the reflection and moonlight images.

Thanks again for the comments!

Jeremy - Yeah I know, I'm jealous... my buddy in Jackson says he's been riding quite a bit of powder up there still... but I just could not stay there any longer... mostly because I was living in the Village which became an absolute ghost town after the mountain closed. I had to make a move. You'll love the MarkII I'm sure... I know I do!

Immensely entertaining gallery, Jack. My favorite was the Bryce snowy sunrise, what beautiful light. Also really enjoyed the rattlesnake and horse petroglyph, amazing combination!

Jack,

You've done it yet again...what a rewarding trip you had. You got some killer shots. "Bryce Canyon Snowy Sunrise" and "Zion Moonlight" are my picks. Welcome home!
Posted by Brett Deacon on May 7, 2010 at 2:36 PM
An unbelievable collection of photos, as usual. Amazing! :toast: Bryce Canyon Snowy Sunrise is the best shot I've ever seen from this location. Keep up the great work!
Posted by Stan Rose on May 7, 2010 at 6:16 PM
Just what i was thinking--that Bryce sunrise shot is probably the best ive seen from there. Awesome collection, as always, Jack!
