Yellowhammer
A first for me.

I popped out to test my camera after having the 1.4x calibrated, and this fellow came to see what I was doing. Certainly wasn't what I was after and not ideal as the shot had to be taken hand held, but I was happy to take the opportunity....

About 20% cropped and a small twig cloned top left.

Camera Model Canon EOS-1D Mark III
Shooting Mode Aperture-Priority AE
Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/1000
Av( Aperture Value ) 5.6
Metering Mode Evaluative Metering
Exposure Compensation +1/3
ISO Speed 640
Lens EF500mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x
Focal Length 700.0mm

The equivalent of 700mm, handheld? That is very impressive. It may have just been a grab shot, but I really like it. My only criticism is that I would have liked to see the bird just a little higher in the frame.

Lovely shot, maybe reduce the headroom to raise the bird.

And I though you had 'man flu'

Looks good to me, the feather detail is there certainly, but would like to have the f at say 7.1 or 9 as you had the SS and it might have given more detail in the head. Would agree with David re a bit more below, however as this may not be possible I would go with Tim's suggestion. Lets hope its all sorted now.

Very nice Graham, especially for a grab shot with that setup.

Nicely done Graham, especially hand held.

Agree on the wish for a little more at the bottom. Great BKGR.

Cheers

I'd be very happy to have taken this - even with a tripod. Agree about the composition.

A really attractive bird and a well captured moment, especially handheld.
A pano crop may work well here too.
