Well even if folks think this will be a dismal year I want to try and get a list of good spots to go for poppies or wildflowers. I am asking now incase they do start to bloom I am not rushing around trying to figure out where something is or how to get there at the last minute.
The only real 2 places I know are Anza Borrego (and I don't know WHERE there are the good spots) and Gorman. And I only know Gorman since I have seen the hills as you drive north on the 5 just before you hit it. But I don't know where there you can pull off the highway to get good pics or walk around.
Soo.... Any locations (and directions!) you might have for where could possibly be good spots and can share I would really be grateful.
Because the spots will always change from year to year, it is best to bookmark sites like CalPhoto and Desert USA, which keep running tabs on the best spots at the moment.
The most predictable place in ABDSP is actually not in the park, but in the town of Borrego Springs...
Drive East thru "Christmas Circle" (traffic circle), head about 1/4 mile and make a left onto DiGiorgio... from there, take that all the way up until the pavement ends (3 miles?) once in the sandy areas there are typically some flowers. Or, take DiGiorgio and make a right onto Henderson? (something like that) and follow that down about 1 miles and look North into the vast open area.
This area is prone to flooding when there is rain, but since there's been no rain, I don't know what you'll find.

Agree with Warren, watch CalPhoto and Desert USA websites for reports, which are usually pretty specific as to roads, where to a park and such. You forgot about the most "reliable" poppy spot, the Antelope Valley Poppy Preserve about 20 miles from Gorman. (Gorman has a nice frontage road right against the hill, easy as pie if the flowers happen) Personally these late rains are getting my hopes up a bit for a salvage of the season.

Aside from the crazy year we had last year down in So Cal, I think a safer bet on an annual basis is further up the coast. I saw some nearly as impressive displays at various places around the Bay Area and beyond when I lived up there. Unfortunately for the most part I wasn't experienced enough of a photographer to better take advantage of the opportunities when they presented themselves.
