I've been working a new patch recently, and have just stopped kicking myself for not getting to it before now. 20 minutes from home, and I've already got the Yellowhammer I posted a few days ago, and now this, which is another first for me - a compliant, displaying Pheasant with a relatively clear BG.
The light wasn't great yesterday evening, but sufficient for this shot which is FF.
Camera Model Canon EOS-1D Mark III
Shooting Mode Aperture-Priority AE
Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/500
Av( Aperture Value ) 5.6
Metering Mode Evaluative Metering
Exposure Compensation 0
ISO Speed 800
Lens EF500mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x
Composition is great, as is the action. I really like the way the background creates almost a shadow image of the bird. Only nit from me would be the blown whites on the neck and the brightness of the wings.
I like this,I've been after one of these for ages .
In the image I chose Ctrl, alt ,shift and tild together and release , control j ( copy and paste ) , Changed blend mode to multiply , reduce opacity to 70%
Duplicated the base layer and put it to the top of the stack , hit levels and adjusted output to 235 ish on the white , reduced opacity to 75% .
Bottom right wants a tadge less something, its colour is incongruent with the rest of the base.
Brightness and colors look fine on my screen and i love the pose and the action captured so fussing about a white ring on the neck in such a wonderful shot is not on my mind..
Well done captureing this behaviour!
I had a similar encounter recently but yours is much better executed than my attempt. I had it framed beautifully and took some record images. It then started displaying and I clipped the bird on every edge of the image !
I like the way you have composed the image, the open beak and wings.
Nice moment captured...had the pleasure see the male displaying to a couple of females recently. Wonderful characteristic birds. The light seems to be spot on too.
Think I need a new patch I know you've been after this shot for a while so congratulations on being in the right place and getting it. No chance of the HAP coming after you for this one LOL. Looks like it was a very sucessful evening last night then
Good background and good composition.
Exposure looks to be a touch bright and, as has been said by PhilH, i think a slightly slower shutter speed would have done wonders for making the image a little less static.
Is this full frame? Not 3:2 ratio and looks to be a huge dof for focal length/ aperture/distance needed to get bird this size in frame

Nice pose with great action.. I wonder if a slightly lower S/S might have helped to get just a little more movement in the wings?
Minor nits covered but no big deal.

Great pose on this one Graham, smart shot of a Pheasant.

All of the above aside, I do like the shot
