This past Mother's Day weekend, I spent Saturday along the Apache Trail east of Mesa, AZ. After a sunrise that did not produce much grandeur over Canyon Lake due to eastern overcast, I hiked a little ways up a draw and saw what I initially thought was a bird in a rock hole. Alas, the owlet turned into a hedgehog cactus.

After the dawn's light, I continued on scouting for an evening shoot. I have not been on the Apache Trail in maybe 25 years, so this was like a seeing an area for the first time. These saguaros were east of Fish Creek Hill mid-morning.
At least you didn't have to reach into the hole to find out! I guess AZ isn't really a place where you wanna be poking your hands into holes anyways.
Funny, this is similar to Nat's image in terms of comp, but I like your closer view of the lead subject, and the separation and depth that the shadows create. It's also fairly nice, warm-fuzzies light. The wispy clouds add something, too.
That cave/cactus shot is really cool and unusual.!

Don,that is the first time I recall seeing something like that. Without the recent owlet photos in the memory, I'm sure that I would have just walked by this.
Todd, judging from the shadow angles, looks like I just missed the initial light peeking down the slope. Next trip, next spring, when the yellow brittlebrush are in peak bloom.
Right after the cactus hole, I caught this small rock ridge with a few pastel clouds behind. Feel I need a dominant foreground element in it still. No killer shots on this trip, but thought I would just share a few of the possibly better images from Saturday.
