Image made on May 1 at Matthiessen State Park in north-central Illinois. The waterfall itself is a function of runoff from a dammed lake. Above the falls, out of the frame here, is a rather unattractive fence and bald (in this case gray) sky. The logs are simply part of the landscape at this spot.
Converted to b/w in PS because of the (naturally) fairly monotone scene and to bring out the full effects of the toning, which was a good part of what attracted me to the shot in the first place. In the interests of full-disclosure, I did clone out the end of a branch that was intruding from the right edge of the frame that I simply couldn't exclude without substantially altering the composition.
The B/W treatment is great, especially for this location(just upstream from my camera dunking and shoulder dislocation). The canyon walls are a bit difficult to illuminate and the water isn't exactly crystalline. Nice shot.
Shoot me an e-mail next time your up this way. (If you want company, of course!)
I like the BW here, Kerry, and the comp as well. It also has a nice moody feel to it. A slight crop off the bottom might help bring the viewer a little closer to the scene, but I like the water trails you have here as leading lines. Nicely seen and executed.
Not having been there like Bruce, I think that with only the photo to judge by I would shorten the FG. If I was on site I may chose the same comp. I am sure it is beter in larger size.
