On May 2 I joined a group from the Ozark Society on a hike to a scenic area called The Penitentiary, which is located on Whiteley Creek in the mountains just west of Boxley. I had longed to visit the area for many years - ever since I first saw pictures in Neil Compton's The Buffalo River in Black and White - but it is on private property.
I only took along a point-and-shoot camera (fitted with a polarizer) and a table-top tripod, but I feel like I managed to record the essence of the place.
I've always loved this place - especially Neil's descriptions of it! Too bad it is all on private property (three different land owners to boot) or more folks would get the chance to visit...
You did some fine work with your point & shoot and tabletop tripod, John. I especially like the little cascade spilling into the bedrock pool. Thanks for letting us get a glimpse of this little-seen area.
Beautiful work, John. I've wanted to visit that place for years too, and have had to decline several invitations to go. It's aptly named for the notion that it's a place you can get into, but can't get out of. From the looks of your photographs, I'm not so sure I would want to get out! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting. Looks like a beautiful place...Your last image reminds me of a place along Cedar Creek. It has that same bowl effect with beautiful little cascades.
Glad you got to make the trek!
Looks like a really cool spot, John. The photos look great for a point and shoot. Did you wish you brought more than your point and shoot after you left?
Beautiful shots John sounds like it was a fun hike. It reminds me of Smtih Creek a little just looking at these. I am sure it is even more beautiful with a littel more water in the creek.

I'll post three more shots in replies below.
What point and shoot did you take?
Glad you got to make the trek!
