I often have the hood of my 500 mm off, as it's very cumbersome to hold and move with the long hood on. However, I worry about dinging the front glass when I lay it in the car. The original lens vinyl draw-string glass cover is awkward and hard to get on and off.

These new lens caps were the solution for me - maybe for you too. They fit snugly, go on and off quickly and easily, and are a small business venture. They are also sold at B7H for a bit more.

If you're interested, support Don Zeck and his lens caps and consider buying directly from him!

It's far more than a cheap plastic lens cap. It's extremely tough and well-made of a rubber, flexible product.

WELL worth it to protect your glass, imo.

Looks like it probably works, but for the money I prefer this commercial solution:

http://www.lenscoat.com/hoodie-lens-caps-c-5.html It to has a "hard" front to protect the glass. Slips on and off easily.

Keith, I had one of these and found it did not fit when the lens hood was off. It was also cumbersome to remove or put on, imo.

The advantage of the Zeck "cap" is that it is also hard rubber, very easily removed, and fits whether or not the hood is on. It actually fits just inside the barrel of the lens, without touching the glass, so it does not matter if the lens hood is on or off. The handle makes it easy to put on or take off.
