Bishop Iris
I haven't posted anything in some time, so I thought I would break my silence. This is an image from last weekend in Bishop. The iris along Brockman Lane were nice, but maybe not as good as in years past. Please forgive the iconic location. All comments welcome. Best Regards.

Michael,

Really like the composition, DOF, and the light. It's too bad that many of the prominent foreground plants weren't in bloom.

Considering the type of spring we've had, I'm surprised the blooms aren't more abundant. These meadows absolutely explode during good years. Did you get a chance to find any other wildflower hotspots around Bishop, as I may be up there next weekend? Thanks.

This is a very nice shot. Ditto the above comments. Also, I like how the trees lead the eyes to the mountains on the horizon. It looks like you used a flash to add light to the foreground. Is that correct?

Thanks for sharing. I never tire of icons.

Michael,

Nice to see a post from you and more importantly that you're out there shooting. This is a very lovely and well composed image. I can't say I've seen an Iris landscape like this. Even despite the foreground flowers aren't all in bloom, the overall comp with the mountains framing the scene just works beautifully - well balanced.

My only nit/suggestion would be the blues in the mountain shadows. If it were mine I would selectively back off the blue sat in that area along the base of the mountains. Otherwise, I think you've captured a winner.

Hey Michael, this is an unmistakable view for all us eastern sierra travelers. You did not state whether this was digital or film, regardless, the post processing looks very nice indeed. I might, as Lon has suggested, select the blue at the base of the mountains and tone those down just a bit. That would be an easy adjustment to experiment with to see how you like the look.

Michael,

Very nice image of the Iris and Mountains. I visited this area in the first weekend in May and it was practically dead, no blooms showing hardly at all , looks like you got there during the show. I think with the very cool March and April we had things are a little behind in some places. It has been an amazing spring up and down the E. Sierra.

Michael, this is a pretty and classic scene. I would concur with Lon's suggestion about the blues. Are you still dragging the 4x5 around or mostly shooting digital?

Hi Everyone and thanks for your kind words. Lon, Pau and Harley, thanks for the imput on the color balance. I'll give it a try. This is a MF digital image. I still lug my 4x5 around, but the resolution on the MF is good and I guess I'm a little lazy... Anish, I did hear that there was a nice bloom down at Division Creek, which is just south of Big Pine. I stopped by to check it out and there was nice coverage, but I didn't do any shooting because it was mid-day and harsh light. It might be worth stopping by to check it out. I posted anyother Bishop iris image, but as was noted, the coverage this year just wasn't as full. Roland, no flash, just my spoty dodging. Thanks again for all of your comments. Best Regards.
