My parents and I are trying to get a dslr for my brother for his birthday, but were looking for something somewhat inexpensive because this will be his first. I was in a store on multiple occasions and played around with the d3000 but to me it just didnt do it for me. Anyother reccomendations for a camera and lense kit to get started for around 500 +/- $100? thanks
I'll second what Kent said. You can get more camera for the money buying used. It has it's risks too, but if you want the most for your money that's the route I would go.
I just got a Nikon D5000, refurbished by Nikon for $525 from Adorama. It came with the standard 18-55 VR lens. The condition is top notch, and has a warranty, which other used cameras may not.
I'd probably second the suggestion for a version of the Canon Rebel with the 18-55mm. It's what I got as my backup camera. I purchased it in mint used condition through KEH. If you are looking used, KEH often has as good prices and they are reliable.
I am of the opinion that any more there are some fine non-dslr cameras out there these days if a person isn't intending to get serious with photography. My G9 made nice enlargments, could be fitted with filters, is convenient and fun to use. The G11 is less than $500. Sometimes I think people buy more camera than they need.
My wife got a Rebel T1i as her first SLR. This may be a bit over your budget, and I haven't used other Rebels, but I am quite impressed with this little camera.
