Pawnee Butte National Grassland
Decided at the last minute yesterday afternoon to jumo in the car and drive out to Pawnee for an evening and next morning shoot of wildlife. I like to generally photograph the Burrowing Owls, numerous hawks, songbirds and hopefully Swift Foxes out at Pawnee. Unfortunately, I didn't see any Swift Foxes, but I did see a lot of birds. My Mark IV and 500mm are still in the shot, so I was only armed with my 7D and 300mm with a 1.4 tc. As a result, had to crop to about 50-70% of FF on most images.

Red-tailed or Swainson's (I think...as mentioned before, I am not good at ID'ing hawks) on fence post

These are all stunning - I wouldn't know where to begin to take bird shots like these (I guess a longer lens would be a good starting point, but...)

Any sign of much flowering out that way yet?

Great shots Kurt. Nice and sharp. Still look great from the 300mm.

Very nice images from Pawnee National Grassland - the hawk is a Swainson's - easily identified by the red chest bib.

Wow great Owl shots Kurt. The eyes in the second one really stand out.

One of my favorite birds (burrowing owl) captured to near perfection!
I love 'em all, but the preening cliff swallow does have a slight edge in my book.
All could use a Levels adjustment (white point) for optimum image quality.
Seems to me that the lens/TC combo. with the 7D's 1.6x crop factor would surpass the magnification (though perhaps not the quality) of the combo. you have in the shop.

Regardless, this is outstanding photography, Kurt!

They're all good...I like the "facial" expression on the first one...kinda says "don't mess with me".

Thanks for the comments and suggestions everyone. The Burrowing Owl is also one of my favorite birds. They have a lot of character. I can watch them all day. I am going to head back out there once I get my big rig back. I forgot how many different species of birds are out there...it was pretty impressive.

Very sweet! I think you've inspired some of us to make a trip out there. My only comment is to boost the levels on all of them a bit.

#2 is my favorite as well. All are really neat shots. Guess it's time for me to make another run out that direction :)
