Moment of Magic
70-200mm f2.8 @f4, 200mm.

Not for critique, but had to post it. I was sitting on a tree stump waiting for a woodpecker to arrive at a hole it had been boring nearby, when I heard the faintest of rustling of twigs. It took me forever to see what had caused it - a few feet away. It was the size of a large rabbit at best and had settled under a small tree next to a wire mesh fence. It looked perfectly formed and looked in great condition. In that instant I felt totally inadequate and my instinct told me it needed help - I had to pinch myself to leave it well alone. I willed it to move a fraction to get rid of the twig over its eye but I'm glad it didn't - it was camouflaged to near perfection. I crept away after a few record shots. I went back a few hours later - gone......

Possibly my best encounter with nature so far.

These sort of moments are always so precious and even if you hadn't got the photographic image, you'd never forget it.

I really like this, the technical imperfections add to the "sneaking in the cupboard for a secret look at the christmas presents" feel that this priviledged glimpse of nature in all it's special magic has!

Ian,
the best encounters are the unexpected ones, when you sit under a tree and let nature come to you. You're absolutely right, it doesn't matter if you get a perfect photo or not, it's the moment when a wild creature trusts you that matters. Glad to see you're still getting out and about.
