Hi Guys,
I was reading Alan Woolnough's excellent Stonechat post and wondered what sort of monopod would be most appropriate for this sort of long lens work. I have considered a Manfrotto 680B which is about the right height, weight and price for me however the issue really lies with monopod heads. The manfrotto heads appear to only handle 2.5 kg. I am thinking about using it with a 500mm f/4.5 (3kg) + body.
Does anyone have any advice on the best monopod (+ head) set up to use with longer heavier lenses?

I use the same setup you are proposing. I attach the monopod straight to the lens foot, without using a head. It works fine. Birds flying overhead are impossible but that is also the case with a head mounted.
I "third" the monopod without the head on a 500/4. It's fine. Just can't get flight shots above you!! Fun trying though AND you look a bit of a dork wrestling with it!!
