Hey everyone. I am always looking for good dogwood locations. Does the Buffalo have an abundance of dogwoods?

Yes. Although you will find the largest concentrations of them in forest service areas where there has been recent timber cutting - dogwoods like to grow in those areas that have been opened up a bit, and seem to really like the edges of clearcuts (redbuds too). One place in particular along the Buffalo River area though I seem to recall is the drive into Tyler Bend - a couple of years ago it was blinding because there were so many brilliant dogwoods along the road. One thing is for sure - when the dogwoods are blooming you will have no trouble finding all you want no matter where you go around here...

Brent -

I'm not sure if you're going by canoe or not, but if driving, another spot (just before you drop down into Boxley Valley if you're headed east) you might try is the Sweden Creek Falls area. In addition to dogwoods, there's some pretty nice wild azaleas, crested iris, shooting star, jack-in-the-pulpit, and if you're lucky, a gorgeous waterfall. As you're walking-in (which is short mile or so to the falls) you pass a semi-open area just before you get to an abandoned house. You can't miss the big dogwoods on the right. Really a special place! Tim has directions in his guidebook, or the Heritage Commision has directions on their website.

Brent:

You can always keep up with what is blooming, turning color, how much rain, how many bears, if the swans are still here or not, etc., at the Cloudland Journal page.
