Signs of Spring at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison!
Hi everyone,
Hope this post finds you all well. I apologize for lack of posting/participating in a while. You would think, now that I live in Gunnison, I would be posting every week lol. I have actually gotten the chance to get out some during the winter, but only in between frequent doctor visits and hospital stays for health issues that have come up. But I cannot be kept down! I'm on the mend and getting out lots more, and can't wait for summer! After a long winter, signs of spring are finally arriving in Gunnison county and surrounding areas. Locals are going nuts, getting out their rafts, kayaks, mountain bikes, jeeps, hiking gear, etc.
I decided to make a visit out to the Black Canyon last week. I CANNOT believe it has taken me so long to see this place! I was totally blown away, what an amazing humbling place. I went in early, got there just after sunrise, and it was overcast with a lot of fog rolling through the canyon. Instead of being bummed, I took it as an opportunity to try and capture some dramatic images. At some points, the fog was so thick you couldn't see into the canyon, but I just waited it out until the views showed up again. When it was too foggy for canyon shots, I practiced my macro and flower photography on some of the wildflowers that were beginning to pop up. Paintbrush is starting to grow everywhere. I will be going back soon to see how the wildflower situation is coming.
I think the painted wall is one of my favorite views! But I couldn't see it with so much fog, so I got back into my car to get a snack, wondering if the sun was going to peek out anytime that morning. I watched several people stop, get out and look and then get back into their car and leave. After a while, the clouds and fog started to clear, so I jumped out of my car and went back to the overlook to see if I could get some shots with the sunlight peeking into the canyon. Some of these might not be very original comp wise, but I was just awed, being here for the 1st time and remembering how blessed I am to live so close to all of this. I am definitely getting me an annual pass!
Enjoy and hope you all have a great start to spring and summer shooting!
Blessings,
Kelly

Practicing my macro photography while waiting for the clouds and fog to clear.
Wildflower Report: Indian Paintbrush is beginning to pop up everywhere! I had to look closely, as they are just beginning to bloom. Also those yellow flowers (not sure what they are), are everywhere, too. Gonna go back and check again soon.

I don't know if I like this in landscape or portrait mode? I like that there is more blue sky in this one, tho.

My favorite here is the first one, really like the mood from the fog while still being able to see the river clearly. Way to hang in there until the clouds started to part, it was obviously worth the wait!

I agree that the first shot is killer! The river close-up really appeals to me too, but I'm a sucker for whitewater.

Yeah the first one shows the scale so well I feel dizzy looking at it!

A amazing place it is. Pictures just don't show how deep the canyon really is. I was in awe the first time as well. I really like the first one.

First one is def moody, but I really like the 5th one (second to last)? Love how the fog/clouds are hanging beneath the cliff tops and that little touch of blue sky. Plus the lines on the wall w/ the river make great diagonals. Nice work all around.

Really nice series, Kelly. I wish I lived in your neck of the woods.

Great shots! I love #2

These are nice! The first one may be my fave, but that one looks a little flat. I think a sizable contrast boost and a little more sharpening my help that one (and maybe some others, though those look better to me overall).

First and fourth for me. I prefer the horizontal because it shows more of the wall. Nice set.

Very nice series. My favorite is the horizontal. It's been way too long since I've been there.

I love #1 and the macro of the paint brush is exceptional. Great work.
