Vacation timing for Big Horn Rut
I want to plan my 2010 vacation around crossing off another photo from my “bucket list.” Last year I was successful in crossing off the number one photo on my list, salmon jumping to an awaiting brown bear by going to Brooks Falls in Alaska. This year I want to focus on capturing two Big Horn rams head butting. I live in Ohio but have spent many vacations in Colorado. I was pretty successful capturing some nice rams in 2007 and 2008 by just driving back and forth on Rt 34 mostly between Drake and Estes Park in early November. I’ve even witnessed some breeding taking place but have not been able to capture any head butting since over 20 years ago in Yellowstone. This year I would like to plan my vacation specifically around the best chance to photograph some rutting rams. From what I’ve read on here, I’m guessing I would be better off to move my time back from early November to mid November but I would appreciate input on when & where from some of you that are willing to give me some guidance.

I would plan for last half of November, 1st week of December and head up the I-70 corridor between Georgetown and Idaho Springs, drive the frontage road in the morning hours. Another option is Whiskey Basin near Dubois, Wyoming, same time frame.

Could I get you to elaborate a little more please. When I pull up the Georgetown area on mapquest the only place that is labeled Frontage Rd goes from Empire to Dumont. Am I correct that you take Old Georgetown Rd on the west side of 70 out of Georgetown, then county rd 232 over to Frontage Rd, then Stanley Rd from Dumont to Idaho Springs? or is the Frontage Rd area between Empire and Dumont the only area to concentrate? I appreciate your assistance.

There is also a little dirt road right at the Georgetown exit. Instead of taking a left into town, take a right and just follow the dirt road. I usually hit that first thing in the morning.
