Unfortunately, you need to pay extra for the upgrade to IT8 calibration capability. Jerry did some beta work for them early on, so he got me mine for free, but a friend of mine recently had the same issue, and as we investigated, we discovered that it was an add-on feature unless you have a buddy with ties to the company.

I found that to be a rather odd requirement for such a full-featured program, too.

Silverfast full version is very cool and is purchased by specific scanner model. Sometimes even similar models in the same scanner family will have slightly different versions. Note that If you upgrade to a different scanner you also will be paying for a new version of Silverfast too! So a different version for a film scanner, and one for a flatbed. When I talked to Silverfast a few months ago they had no discounts for multiple software users. That being said, if you are really, really serious about the quality of your scans and want complete control of all aspects of your scans then Silverfast is a must. Thanks!

Darren,

I prefer the Wolf Faust IT8 Targets over the Silverfast targets. You really should be using targets specific to the types of film being used. I have targets for Velvia, and Provia/Astia. While I do use the AI version of the software I do not have the calibration versions as I find that the calibration you should be able to accomplish with Monaco EZColor or Gretag Eye-One Match (the one I use) provides superior profiles to scan against. The AI version is definitely worth the money but personally I avoid using their profiling piece and consider the money better spent buying film specific targets from Wolf Faust.

This stuff gets kinda complex quickly. If you want a hand calibrating your unit give me a call/email and we'll set something up.

Darren,

Nice! The Wolf Faust ones are a real bargain (for those who dont know what we are talking about this guy Wolf Faust in Germany offers a great value getting calibrated IT8.7 Targets Wolf Faust). It is pretty straight forward with the AI option to create the profiles. Email me if you need a hand.
