OK, I may have messed up-I have started using the Lightroom Beta 3 version for processing some of my images for my client's and would like to export the catalogs back into Lightroom version 2.7 for safe keeping. I realize (now) that the Beta 3 version may not allow me to reopen these images when the final Lightroom 3 version is released so I want to try to save these now, Anybody know what I should do?
you can always export those images as originals and then import them to your LR 2.7 catalog - you might loose (or better WILL loose) some or all of your development settings as those are different from 2.x. Note that there is a known bug with exporting images to the folder where the original images are, they will be overwritten without warning- so make sure you export to another folder.
The final LR3 version will let you upgrade your LR3 Beta catalog (at least with LR1 and 2 this was the case) but of course it is not known if all development setting will be 'upgraded' correctly as there might have been changes, so your images might look a bit different.
Jeff - I'm not very familiar at all with Lightroom, but what happens if you just copy the images and XMP files over someplace else, and try to import them into 2.7? It may keep the options/settings that it recognizes. (Or it might error out, or it might not read the XMP altogether -- but it's worth a shot.)
You cannot export a catalog backwards. You can import your raw images into 2.7 (and reprocess them) or export all your processed images as tiffs and them import the processed tiffs into 2.7.
