Lovely and little known areas in the Oregon Desert need your help. Below is the text from our annual submission request letter. Contributing photographers have included: Bruce Jackson, Alan St. John, Marc Adamus, Tyson Fisher and Greg Burke among many others. If you have explored the Oregon desert and have some images to share please take note. This link > http://onda.org/callforphotos2011/ < has the list of focus areas and submission details. We really are looking at showing the areas of critical concern rather than than the "drive by" locations that have their own established protection in place, Painted Hills for example. I would be happy to answer any questions: Jim Davis - desertdust52@yahoo.com

Submission Request letter:

I am inviting you to join me in a very worthwhile endeavor. The Oregon Natural Desert Association (ONDA), based in Bend, Oregon, is publishing their seventh full sized wall calendar, featuring the wildest and most significant areas in Oregon’s high desert.

The 2011 “Wild Desert” calendar will serve to educate people about the magnificent and relatively unknown landscapes that ONDA and its members tirelessly work to protect. We hope that our images will inspire more people to join them in their efforts. The calendar will also serve to generate important exposure for ONDA. (Visit www.onda.org to learn more.)

Although we will not be paid for the use of our images, the rewards will be great. The use of our images will aid in the protection of the high desert country that speaks to our souls, and provides us renewal each time we go there. This is a great opportunity for us, as photographers, to give something back to nature for the exquisite experiences nature provides.

On the reverse of this letter you will find a list of priority areas for the calendar as well as submission guidelines. In our review of images we place great emphasis on these priority areas as these are truly the most precious and need to be in the public eye. Please contact ONDA at 541-330-2638 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              541-330-2638      end_of_the_skype_highlighting begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              541-330-2638      end_of_the_skype_highlighting begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              541-330-2638      end_of_the_skype_highlighting if you have any questions.

Thank you very much for your time. We look forward to reviewing your photographs for the 2011 “Wild Desert” calendar. Together, we can keep our deserts wild!

Forgive this question, but can you explain exactly where the money form the sales of these calandars will go? Is the ONDA a nonprofit organization? Do you get a paycheck from this organization?

I just see more and more "organizations" ask for free images these days, and I feel for the people who make their living selling photos. I have a day job, but too many of my photo friends here have their livelyhoods chipped away at from proposals similar ot this.

If the ONDA is a non profit org, and you & staff donate your time...then that is a cause worth donating to. If you make money at this, then it is unfair for you to ask for any of us to give our time & works away... all in my hunble opinion of course... :wavey:

The Wild Desert Calendar is first an education tool, trying to put a face on the little known but fragile areas of the Oregon desert. ONDA is a non-profit (explore the website www.onda.org ) and I am a volunteer. The calendar will be in its 7th edition this coming year. All volunteer including graphics designer and pre-press color edit person. We pay for the printing and last year maybe we covered cost. ONDA has worked very hard over the years for Steens Mtn (Steens Mtn Protection Act) protection, newly established wilderness areas (Badlands/Spring Basin), and now working on proposed wilderness in the John Day River drainage among other issues. I mentioned the landscape photographers associated with our work in order to show other dedication to the cause. I too am offended by "for profit" organizations asking for free use of images that cost time and money for the photographer.

Jim,

Thanks for your repsonse, and explanation. Hats off to your efforts, and I hope your cause gains much momentum then... I wish that there were more of you pioneering the cause :toast:

ONDA is a good organization and has worked for many years to preserve and protect some wonderful areas in eastern Oregon. And unlike some calendar calls and photo contests, they don't try to grab all rights for your photos.

Thanks Greg-
Hope to see some of your work in our first image review meeting coming up next week.
We have also recently made connections with a NW PDX gallery for showing/exhibition for this coming October. Will be exciting to see a group of quality OR desert landscapes put out for the public to view.

I'm heading out to my "getaway" in Prineville this weekend. I'm thinking about checking out The Badlands and seeing whether I get anything worth submitting. I know it's not the best season for some trails, but if you have suggestions, let me know (email me at diggsmiller@msn.com if you prefer).

Thanks to Marylynne and Greg -
Always fun to see new faces in our submission review. Your images made the first round and we will probably focus more closely on main month images/associated detail shots next week.
cheers-
