Spent some time at Cromford Canal recently and got distracted from the Water Voles by all the grebes with chicks.

Hoards of photographers were further back along the canal so I decided to walk further along and found this family group. The light was harsh but got some semi acceptable images.

I am having mixed results with the 1.7tc as this image feels really soft even though my shutter speed was fine???

C&C advice welcome

Teleconverters produce better results with prime lenses. I think that image quality with the 1.7tc is only acceptable when you are stopped down to f11 so a better combination of shutter speed, ISO and apperture for this would have been 1/640; ISO400; f11 with no exposure compensation. This would have given you the same overall exposure value - "sunny f16" plus one third.

Nice interaction between the adult and the chick.

nice behaviour captured but it does look a little soft to me. Phil's advice sounds useful.
