Boblinks in open field

So I finally found a field with nesting bobolinks but they are really hard to get close too and also the only thing close to a perch is a black board fence. My question is how to set up for good photos without messing up the breeding, nesting and brooding of young. My thoughts are to set an old log in the corner of the field with a branch sticking up high enough to provide a perch and then put a blind within camera range. Thoughts on getting close to the open field species?

When I had a field full of Bobolinks (before the Harriers ate most of them) I found that if I watched for a while I could see where the favorite perches were. Then I would approach within range of that perch and simply sit very quietly for a long time. Sooner or later they would come back into range. I did wear camo clothing but was not in a blind. I don't know if the clothing makes any difference or not but always felt it helped break up my body size so that I seemed smaller and less threatening. They certainly knew I was there when I arrived.

I had my camera mounted on a tripod and would be set up for the perch. That way I never had to move as they slowly came closer and closer to my position.

Hope that helps, don't know if it will work everywhere but it did for me.

Thanks Cindy and Peter this is a breeding / nesting field and I did not know about the sent trail for foxes and the like which of course there are many. I'll take that advice too heart. I can see where the perch but its too heavy of cover to get clear views and I would be walking in the field. However at the edge of the field where the fence is placed a log with an old snag sticking up and this morning on my way too work I could clearly see bobo's on it. I have a long weekend coming up so I'm going to set up my hind and try. I'll post results if I get lucky.
