I just returned from a trip the Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Most of the time was spent around the Munising area revisiting a number of popular places including Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and a number of waterfalls. On this trip I did visit a beautiful but hard to find water fall called Rock River Falls. I spent several hours photographing the falls. I arrived just as the sun was reaching the falls so I missed out on a few shots with the entire falls in the shade. However, the sun provided some interesting photo opportunities as it hit various parts of the falls.
This can be a difficult falls to find so I’ve provided some detailed driving instructions on my web site
along with additional photos. The trail to the falls is less that a mile but it can be very boggy in places so I would suggest wearing some rubber boots for the walk in. Boots also help if you are going to be doing photography because some of the best shots require wading in the stream.
Sweet shot, Phil! I agree that Rock River Falls is a very photo-friendly location, and hard to find. Thanks for posting the directions. I can get there, but not without a wrong turn here or there. It seems like the conditions are pretty dry for this time of year. I agree that knee boots are the best way to make the most of this beautiful location. You've done a great job of showing off its assets.
Thanks for the comments. I forgot to add that all of the waterfalls in the UP and Northern Wisconsin were much lower than I had seen them. The only exception was the Amnicon River which had enough water flowing so that Now and Then Falls also flowing. Eliot Falls at Miners Beach was the lowest I've ever seen it.
Phil, nice capture of a waterfall that has a sweet memory for me. Boggy conditions can be an understatement at times, depending on recent rainfall. Getting down to the falls is as much an adventure as getting to the parking area. Oh, beware of bears. We ran into some bear hunters on one fall excursion. Glad you had a good time.
Phil - this is wonderful shot. The sun filtering through in the background and reflecting off the top right side of the falls caught my eye. I'd love to get here sometime. Thanks.
Very Nice, Phil: I thought I had been to all the good ones around Munising. Obviously, I am mistaken :-). Thanks for the detailed directions. Some really nice shots on your site. Worth clicking on the link. Must have been hard to choose which one to post here.
This is nice, Phil. I looked at some of your other shots too and you did some good work there. It would have been hard to pick one to post here. A really nice exposure on the water and your shutter speed gave the water a great look. Well done!
I've been to this specific location once, in the fall of '05. Waterflow was better, but conditions for shooting decidedly were not (windy and full sun). Nice take on this waterfall and I agree--having the foot gear necessary to wade at just about any watery location is a major compositional plus.
