A couple of people on here know that I have been in a long dialogue with the City of Colorado Springs, and the Pikes Peak Highway administration about getting access to the highway before "normal" hours. There are a few places accessible from the highway that I think would be great sunrise shots.
After many months of e-mail after e-mail being passed around from one person to another (exacerbated by people being laid off or retired due to budget cuts), I was able to engage in a long conversation with the right person. I explained what I wanted to do, and he explained the issues the city and highway would have with early openings. It didn't look promising.
A short time later, they approached me about opening the highway early on two dates, one in the summer and one in the fall. Figuring that two dates were better than no dates, I gave them my enthusiastic endorsement (for whatever that is worth . )
In any case, as of this weekend, it became official. The highway will open at 4:00 am on June 20th, and at 5:30am on September 26th. These openings are approximately 90 minutes before sunrise.
For details, see the announcement here: http://www.springsgov.com/SectionIndex.aspx?SectionID=18.
I'd like to thank Mr Jack Galvan of the Pikes Peak Highway for taking the time to hear me out, and giving my thoughts serious consideration.
It certainly is...thanks very much for all of your time and efforts!
Will you be able to take advantage of 'Bob Falcone Day' on one or both of those mornings?
Well, as luck would have it (bad luck, anyways), I'll have to arrange for someone to fill in for me for half a shift at work so I can make the June date, and for the September date, I won't even be on this continent!
I hope people take advantage of this, and it becomes a regular annual event.
