Never been upto the Pacific Northwest before, I am thinking of 4-5 day trip early May flyling into Portland. What should I expect for conditions this time of year? I am looking for suggestions for places to visit etc. I am interested in shooting at least 1 day on the coast plus alos getting some streams/waterfalls, greenery shots etc.Any type of trees in bloom yet or flowers? Open for ideas.....I know you guys and gals can help.

Thanks
Jody

Jody,
May will most likely bring rain and some very interesting clouds. Flowers of the area will most likely be out in force during that time as well. The waterfalls will be lush with green surroundings as well. You picked a good month, I'd say.

The coast is good pretty much any time of the year. The waterfalls of the Columbia Gorge are very close to Portland, are easy to get to, and great to photograph. About an hour and a half away (south and east) of Portland is Silver Falls State Park. The falls are great and there should be some forest flowers out by then as well.
Be prepared for rain. You never know.

This will be a great time to be in the Columbia River Gorge. I will be hitting it pretty hard that month as well..

Like Rick said - May will be rainy and green. So will January, February, March, April, June, July, August, September, Obtober, November and December.

Chilly & damp, but by May the clouds break a lot and there are big dramatic light and dark skies. Rainbows. Skunk cabbage will blossom and low-altitude irises will be starting. Still snowy in the Cascades; streams at roaring spring height, waterfalls everywhere. You won't find as much open space as you're probably used to in our mountains, and the forests here are often dark lush and primeval. Whole tree trunks enveloped in inches of bright mosses, and ferns everywhere; delicate spring foliage on the alders and maples. The Willamette Valley is open country, astonishing shades of green fields, oak trees, not such a huge scale but lovely wetlands.

Com'on guys,
Oregon in May isn't all that wet. I think the average rainfall is around two inches. But, I think it's probably the best month to get out the camera.

Good locations? Do you have anything equivalent to the dogwood trees up there this time of year?
