Under the umbrellas at Compton Falls
With all the recent rain I could not resist the chance to catch Compton Falls even with all the ticks, chiggers, poison ivy and snakes on the bushwack to get to Compton Falls. I did not see any snakes but I bet plenty saw me! I had never been to Compton Falls but heard what a beautiful place this was. The descriptions were correct!

Here are a couple of shots I got from different angles late in the day. The glow from the late evening light was really nice.

This is from the other side of the Creek.

Super job Tom, very nice. These are great.

Looks like y'all are having a good waterfall spring up that way.

Both angles are really nice, Tom. The backlight really makes the leaves pop here...just beautiful! Looks like you used your 24-70mm for these?

Beautiful images, Tom. You nailed these.

Very pleasing to view. Top to bottom. Thanks for sharing.

The contrast of the falls and the rocks make the photo.
I like the leaves in the foreground, too. Nice comp.
Good stuff.

Great shots! And I know what a pain it is to get into this place and how hard it can be to get out...;)
Tom, what day did you take these?..just curious. I plan to go back there at some point and do a better job than I did last year.

Hey Tom-These really did turn out nice. I agree with Bill that the backlighting makes these images special. The leaves almost glow.

I am jealous Tom. I tried to shoot a similar shot from underneath about 10 days ago but the water was making way to much wind and the leaves wouldn't hold still. I am glad they held still for you. Nice work.

Really nice work Tom. From the looks of these the destination is well worth the effort to get there.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Bill, I actually used may 16-35 F2.8 for these shots to get the largest angle of view possible.

Bob, I took these shots last Friday. It was a sunny day but we arrived at the falls about 6pm and the falls were already in the late afternoon shadows. You may be able to get this light as early as 5:30pm this time of year? Tim may have a better feel for what time the falls are in the shade?

The plan was to be hiking back to the car by 7pm, to avoid the bushwack in the dark. Thanks to excellent GPS coordinates for the falls in Tim's waterfall guide and coordinates for the car, we were out in plenty of time.

Nice shots, I really, really like the second one. Hope you didn't get any poison ivy!

Hey Tom, it's no fun these days to do this sort of thing until after the sun goes down! I'm getting good at it, but also just had to get another pair of snake gaiters since the last pair were tearing my legs up.

Tim, I think your night vision is much better than mine. I think I need to investigate getting a pair of those snake gaiters!

Scott, I got one little patch of poison ivy, but it was worth it.

Tom, I think both shots look great. This is probably my favorite waterfall to go to, and Bower's is so close it usually makes for a great day hitting both.

Fantastic job on both shots Tom. The water had a chance to get a green cast..it seems like in most photos you see, the water is brown. Also, I never noticed the horizontal pattern of the rocks and foliage in other photos.

Jon - I've only been to Compton's Double once, and the bushwhack there and back didn't leave me with enough energy to even consider going some place else, much less the long hike to Bowers and back.

John- It's definitely not easy hitting both. I usually sleep really well that night when I do, but it makes for a great day of waterfalls. Hard to believe those two great areas are so close to each other.
