Downy Woodpeckers mating
On the theme of woodies! I've been watching a pair of downy woodpeckers pecking out a nesthole. Got lots of shots of them spitting out wood shavings! Yesterday I was thrilled when they had decided that the hole was almost big enough to call home and they mated. First time I've seen this. It was like going to a wedding, awwww.

Bill,

Really cool shot especially with the nesting hole in the background. Love the outstretched wing too. It's a little odd that we humans (or nature lovers anyway) enjoy watching animals mate (hopefully from a purely scientific/biological standpoint) but we would be pretty crepped out if a bunch of animals lined our windows and peered in with the hopes of catching some action!

not much of a future if there ain't no mating! Just part of nature, it seemed a pleasant experience for them both. I suppose if we mated with as much passion on the branch of a tree in the open then the local birds, animals and humans would definitely watch with interest!
