Stunning! One of the best 'detailed' kingfisher images I've seen.

Hi Kieth
Sorry mate - I,ve come back to this a few times and to be honest it doesn't look too sharp to me. Maybe my monitor's on the blink. You're not going to get much DOF at f4 anyway on a 500mm.
Maybe a little space at the bottom would help too.
See what others think.
Cheers
John

Hi Keith

I would be happier with a bit more space at the bottom too...although not as much as an issue for me. I think that there is some good detail in the feathers at the front but focus has been lost a bit due to the angle the bird is sitting at as its not straight on to the camera (f4 would have been great if it was). The background is looking good. I assume that you have taken at other f stop too....although I'm guessing that at 500ISO and a 1/200 it was pretty shady?

Most of the nits covered and I think I would try and lose the stripped bark as I think it pulls the eye down away from the subject. A great DOf will have helped a lot in this image and I'm inclined to agree with John as it doesn't look pin sharp...

Looks like you ran out of DOF shame nice picture..

Its a lovely capture at what appears to be very close range.
However I tend to agree with the majority F4 on 300 with a 500mm will reduce the DOF to virtually mm's.Great BG and pose , worth a revisit.

Nits already covered F4 does not give much DOF and at this angle it has showed it. Shame but great pose and definately worth another go.

My eye keeps getting drawn to the whites on the back of the neck they look pretty hot on my setup. Have to agree with the others he's not looking pin sharp.
I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before you nail him.

Nits covered, but you've captured a great pose. Just keep trying, I'm sure you will succeed next time.

I would agree with most of the crits above. I think it is probably sharp enough within the DoF but that is too thin. I have found KFs quite obliging in the past in that they do hold a pose and when they do it is motionless. I wouldn't hesitate to go down as low as 1/50 giving you something more like f8 if the bird is close. The pose is a beauty though and I still think that you could get a lot more from the raw file in processing as the colours look a bit dull and flat on my monitor.

You need to have a go Keith, you have allowed your camera to screw that one up for you by shooting jpeg. At least in RAW you can only blame yourself!
Why don't you give it a try on some ducks in the park or some squirrels for a day and then play with the results in the evening. Well worth it I promise. Loads of people on here who can help if you struggle. :wavey: eric
