Hi Robert. This is a great pose but the DOF has let you down a bit. At least the eye is good which is always the important bit ! If you get the chance again I would do without the tube, bang the ISO up and get the aperture down to 11 or 16. I often find going a bit farther back gets better results depth of field wise.
Just my opinion.

Hi Robert,

I agree with John here, but it still has quite a nice intimate feel to it which is helped by the shallow DoF. A lower PoV from a slightly more side on angle may also be good.

Cheers,

Lewis.

Hi Robert

A nice image with good composition, agree with John and Lewis, a bit more DoF, at least to bring the whole of the head in focus and a little more angle from the side. Looks like it was a bright day with harsh light, which you have handled well.

All the best.

I think on this occasion I agree totally with John who offers some very helpful hints. With these elongated subjects, DOF is paramount unless you can get a 'portrait' and are completely perpendicular to your subject to maximise the limitations of the focal range.

Comments and advice duly noted folks. I have to say, I do find it difficult sometimes to deliberately 'not' fill the frame as it goes against all I have done in the past but with this macro style work I can certainly see your reasoning so the next opportunity I get I shall give it a go. Thanks.
