I got a Canon 50mm 1.2 lens about a year ago and I love it for general and very specific purposes. (Beautiful for selective focus.) Recently however several professional photographer friends of mine who own and love this lens have had problems with the front element popping off. It seems to be tied to the use of the Canon factory lens hood which seems to impart enough leverage to pry the element off. (The flange where the hood screws in is right on the element.)
I’ve bought a Hoya rubber lens hood that works pretty well as a substitute but it’s not as compact as the factory hood. The good news is it screws into the filter flange instead of the flange on the front element. I am however a little peaved that I have a $1600 lens and have to deal with a problem of this nature.
Just wondering has anyone else run into that problem or heard of Canon acknowledging this problem? Is it just for a certain batch of lenses? And lastly, why is it so darn hard to get into CPS these days? I own lots of Canon L glass but am sticking with the APS-C bodies because they fit my needs better.)
